Re: [EZLINK] New to Singapore - Guide
Hey Nice Explanation.. but one point.. if you are converting currencies isnt it cheaper to do it from Singapore?.
I had some USD with me. When I inquired @ chennai airport. They told me I have to first convert from US Dollar to Rs and then from Rs to Sing Dollars. So I felt it was better to convert from Singapore where you can directly convert from any currency to any currency.

Hi Prashanth,
Very Nice Clarification ..
You have explained very well about the current situation in Singapore ...
This info is very useful for New comers [especially Indians ]
But a small advice, as per my experience taking Starhub one / two year mobile phone connection is really benefit unless U are a temporary worker [I mean came to work for 3 months projects, like that ]

* Please come alone first and not with family - very important.
* Most of the guest houses are not maintained well and will not be
in liveable condition. Since teh guest house will be shared by several
people, plss do not get your family.
* FOR FAMILY - Good rental appartments would be costing you 1350 -
1400 being spacious, silent and a little away from foodcourt. food court
areas are little busy and sometimes, might be uncomfortable with the
food smell lingering in the air.
* There will be no individual homes, they are all flats. There are
appts for 900 - 1000, depends if you want to sacrifice on aircon ( very
imp here), cleanliness & sometimes the homes are not approved.
* Plsss rent out only approved appts, these are appts that have
been approved by the govt to be rented out. Ofcourse there are people
staying in unapproved units, iam not in for debating the choice.
* Pls carry enough cash from india and mostly in Sing dollars, you
will loose money again converting from US to SING. While renting we will
have to pay the Advance (1 month rent) + 1 month rent + agent fee 1/2
monthly rent. Usually we wait for 1 -2 months to get the salary and then
use that for renting and then get the family here. Or take salary
advance from consultants or get around 5KSGD from india. Now we know if
we need to rent a unit of 1000$we will need in all 2500$
* Buy two important books to go around singapore, the street
directory and the bus guide both will come for 25$. with this one will
be able to do everything independently.
* Plss bring your mobile phone from india, it is expensive here.
* Also get an umbrella, it rains here very often, Clothes, Shoes
are all little cheaper in india, or the same here too
* Initially it will not be easy going if you are a pure
vegetarian,, slowly you will find lots of veggie places or Indian NON
Veggiesss as well.
* To open an account we will need an initial deposit of 500$. i
waited until my first pay cheque and used the same as initial deposit in
DBS, min balance is 500 and hence i thought initially my money would be
stuck if i opened an account moment i landed.. good to wait unless you
have enough money
* Never go in for the 2 yr or 1 yr starhub contract.. if you dont
have a mobile from india , buy one in mustafa and then just take the sim
and connection from starhub/singtel. . coz if you break the contract,
then there is a penalty of +/- 500$
* Most of the people i have met liked Singapore only after 30 days
of their stay here. Plss do not come with great expectations. Wait and
get settled and then DECIDE :-)
* Have a Great Stay in Singapore
NOTE-> this is just my experience, i have never intended to hurt
anyone,, just a piece of suggestion, i might be wrong.
