Hi there,
My thoughts here, for your questions...
1. As far i know, most of the providers are giving a device manufactured by
'motorola' but customised by the local VOIP service company. Nothing comes
free. Datatransfer charges applicable. This device needs to be connected to
an DHCP based ADSL router or starhub base model cable modem. This device
will work on Ethernet port or will have Cable adaptability. Cost again
depends on the local provider. I remember i have seen this in starhub's
website itself.
2. It is possible to get calls free on both sides. I think you are talking
about 'http://www.vonage.com' It depends on the plans you choose. Vonage is
giving this option. Basically, this device works on streaming data from your
end to receiving end. Means, the particular device converts your voice to
data and the device in the receiver end will do it oppositely. So, device to
device purely depends on the particular company since there is no telecom
provider involved. So they can give for free.
3. They are giving in cheaper cost because their overhead is different when
compared to telecom providers.
I think vonage is not extending Singapore as locale. I heard they are
popular in USA and Canada.
For your VOIP doubts, you can visit vonage.com website's FAQ section, since
it is good. Happy learning.
:-)
Cheers,
Arun
