Notable places are : Batu Ferringi (beach famous for sports ); George Town, Buddha Temple in George Town, Komtar (like Singapore's City Hall).
Penang Hill By Funicular train (costs about RM 10 only) is a not-to-miss experience.It is very interesting and is one of the pioneering project (more than 50 years back) set up by Europe (Switzerland, I guess).
You wish to take a ferry (RM 1.00) accross the mainland (butterworth) and penang. It takes about an hour for a return trip and very noteworthy. The ferry was set up again by Swiss companies, more than 50 years ago.
Also consider taking a ride along the 12 Km bridge liking the main land and island. It is one of the longest bridges in asia built by the koreans.
A trip to Lankawi can be made in a day. The Ferry starts from Penang Jetty at 8.00 a.m. The time of travel is about 3 hours (wonderful ride). Ensure that you return in time at Lankawi to take the last ferry.
There are lots of hotels in Penang island. Resorts in Batu Ferringi are a bit expensive, but is nice to stay.
